PhD Networks

The report is a result of the mapping exercise conducted by the EABIS Central Coordination Team in 2006 and 2007.

Preliminary research has consisted of an in-depth scanning assessment of EABIS’ archives relating to PhD activities from 2000 onwards. In addition, the EABIS team has conducted an e-mail consultation with the members of the EABIS PhD Network. Data obtained was compiled into a ‘listing of networks’ and ‘listing of events’.

Initial observations following the listing of events and networks

  • The networks are often lacking in consistent structures and processes constituting gaps in effective co-ordination
  • Networks and events often remain ad hoc and based on the individual contacts of researchers or professors / university departments
  • Existing networks tend to focus on a single topic, issue or discipline, e.g. business ethics, human rights or environment
  • There is a lack of inter-disciplinary collaboration and cross-fertilization in dissemination efforts
  • Structures to link young researchers with each other, senior academia and with business and other key stakeholders are often lacking in the networks

Next steps

This mapping exercise will be continued in 2007 with the final recommendations published in the summer of 2007.
